Villa alle Monache – a few words about history

Tuscany Forever Volterra

The hill where Tuscany Forever is located today and the access road. In the distance on the right, you can see Volterra

There is a legend that Localita Casa alle Monache was founded by a female Christian order, but there is no mention of it in historical documents. The confirmed information indicates only that in the beginning of 15th century one of the noble families of the Grand Duchy of Tuscan allocated this area for cultivation. The foundations of the main villa, today called La Famiglia, came from the 16th century. Undoubtedly, it was the first building among the surrounding hills stretching south of Volterra. The owners of these areas, however, never lived in the villa, it was intended for people who managed these areas. Before World War II Localita Casa alle Monache was purchased by the Perucchetti family, which continued to maintain the rural character of these lands. Around the villa, peasants who breed cattle settled, thanks to which Localita became an independent settlement. On the hill were located offices of managers responsible for this area. In the 90s, the villa began to decline, eventually it was turned into a warehouse. Because the hill is located in a seclusion area, over time, the local youth liked it as a place of trysts. In 2008, the hill was bought for the purpose of creation Tuscany Forever.

Villas and apartments Tuscany Forever

Tuscany Forever Volterra
The restored Villa alle Monache, today called the Villa Famiglia (building in the distance on the above photograph) and eleven other villas built completely from scratch, but with Tuscan style and colors, offer a total of 33 apartments of various sizes and separate interior design, where the classics are skillfully combined with practical modernity. The walls, which look like centuries-old buildings from the outside, hide in the center spacious and bright interiors, lit naturally with a large number of windows with a large surface, delighting with beautiful views of the surrounding hills. Although the villas are located close to each other, and all the attractions available at the resort are at your fingertips, each apartment was designed in such way to ensure the greatest possible privacy for the guests. When our patio upstairs in Villa Terra was directed to the west, guests living on the ground floor had a terrace from the east, as a result of which we did not hear each other.

Very well-equipped and stylish kitchen, even encourages you to cook and prepare meals, and then enjoy them while enjoying the beautiful views from the windows or terraces. Noteworthy is ingenuity, attention to detail and guest comfort, comparable to the comfort of your own high standard apartment. The furniture in our apartment was stylish, but also comfortable. I didn’t lack anything. The equipment was designed with Italian taste, but at the same time with Polish care for the practical aspect. Extremely comfortable sofa in our apartment, a large shower, or even a simple electric kettle to heat the water, which is often lacking in apartments furnished by Italians for Italians, well, why anyone would ask for kettle if the Italians – not counting exceptions – don’t drink tea? Interestingly, from my point of view, I found a few books about Tuscany on the bookshelf, also in Polish. Seemingly thematic, about the region, but not shallow and banal, as an American bored with corporate work throws everything away and buys a house in Tuscany. I found very valuable positions, such as the fantastic “Tuscan Journal” by Tessa Capponi-Borawska, or – by looking at pictures of other apartments – alongside the eminent journal “A Hat Full of Cherries” Oriana Fallaci. Is this a coincidence? No, it’s love for Tuscany, put in the Tuscany Forever uprising.

Attractions at the resort

Tuscany Forever Volterra
Among the villas, there are many places where guests can relax and spend time pleasantly. Four swimming pools, including a paddling pool for small children and round pool with artificial river current and sunbeds and showers, all clean, neat, surrounded by carefully groomed greenery. Next, off the beaten track, is a tennis court, and in the middle of the complex a brick, huge grill with a covered place for feasting. Excellent location away from the asphalt road makes the resort quiet and cozy, where you cannot hear passing cars, no noise from the outside. Lovers of walks, jogging and cycling trips will appreciate the surroundings.

Lovers of Italian cuisine, prepared by professionals and beautifully served, will certainly benefit from the offer of a restaurant operating in high season. Every Monday the restaurant hosts a “welcome prosecco”, which is welcome evening with prosecco served to guests at the organizer’s cost. Why Monday? In high season, apartments can be booked only for weeks, with the beginning and ending of stay on Saturdays. Monday evening is the perfect moment when new guests will be able to unpack and relax after the trip. The restaurant also hosts numerous events. For example, we found a tango with live music.

On the menu you will find specialties of both Italian and Tuscan cuisine, as well as a large selection of fine wines.

Tuscany Forever – the ideal base for exploring Tuscany

Tuscany Forever Volterra
You often ask me what location to choose to be close to the Tuscan attractions. The truth is that there is no place from which it would be anywhere close, because Tuscany is too large. But there are locations that provide access to many beautiful places in just one hour to two by car in one way. Tuscany Forever is such a place. Within the range of a one-day trip there are such big cities as Florence, Siena, Lucca and Pisa (airport), the famous Chianti – or at least its western part – also less than two hour drive, to the sea is an hour, where once you reach the coast, you don’t have to choose the nearest beach. The dual carriageway SS1 (Via Aurelia) stretches along the entire Tuscan coast and ensures fast travel, even to more distant place. Of course, at your fingertip is beautiful, medieval Volterra, the Etruscan city known for the production of alabaster, as well as the famous “Manhattan of Tuscany”, or San Gimignano. Don’t forget that in order to feel Tuscany the best and enjoy its charms, sightseeing must necessarily be interspersed with relaxation and unhurried taste of the local cuisine. Spending two or three weeks in Tuscany Forever combined with exploring the area, you will certainly not be bored.

Visiting the vineyard and wine tasting

Tuscany Forever is not involved in the cultivation of vines or olives, but the team running the resort is perfectly oriented in the vine attractions of the area. If you are interested, they will be happy to recommend you or help you arrange a trip with tasting in several neighboring vineyards. I highly recommend you the beautiful, family-run Castelvecchio vineyard, which we had the pleasure of visiting as guests of Tuscany Forever. More about this place I wrote in the post, to which the link is below – unfortunately for now in Polish
