Villa Monastero in Varenna on Lake Como – from a monastery to an aristocratic residence

sagowiec

Villa Monastero, located in the town of Varenna on a narrow, elongated strip of land stretching between the shores of Lake Como and the steep mountainside, is renowned for its beautiful botanical garden. The garden is abundant with trees, shrubs, and flowers whose colors transform from spring to autumn like a kaleidoscope, creating a picturesque backdrop for numerous architectural features. A walk along its pathways, tracing the edge of the water, climbing up and then descending again, is one of the greatest attractions available around Lake Como.

The phenomenon of Villa Monastero

In the town of Varenna, two fascinating estates open their gates to visitors: Villa Monastero and the neighboring Villa Cipressi. However, it is the former that draws the greatest number of garden enthusiasts. Why? Certainly, the garden of Monastero is larger and more diverse, and visitors can also explore its intriguing interiors, which remain inaccessible in Cipressi. These features, combined with its growing popularity through social media, have contributed to the rapid increase in interest in Villa Monastero in recent years. Alongside Villa del Balbianello, made famous by several Hollywood productions and located on the opposite shore of the lake, Villa Monastero ranks among the most popular attractions for first-time visitors to Lake Como.

The popularity of Villa Monastero is also influenced by its location in Varenna, a charming town that boasts excellent transport connections. Visitors can take a car ferry from Cadenabbia or Bellagio, or arrive by train running from Lecco, which is itself accessible by train from Bergamo (guide to the city + travel details).

The building was originally a Cistercian nunnery—founded likely in the mid-12th century by nuns displaced from Comacina Island in the western branch of the lake—which operated for nearly four centuries. The nuns lived here in silence and tranquility, surrounded by gardens, mountain peaks, and the waters of Lake Como, until they were relocated again. The monastery was officially dissolved in 1567 by Cardinal Borromeo and Pope Pius V, who transferred the nuns to Lecco and sold the property along with its gardens. The official reason for this decision, part of the Church’s Reformation efforts, was said to be the immoral behavior of the nuns. How much truth there is to that claim, we will never know.

What is certain, however, is that with the sale of the property, the transformation of the austere monastery buildings into an impressive residence surrounded by a fascinating garden filled with diverse plant species from around the world began. The villa itself dates back to the 17th century when the estate was acquired by the aristocratic Mornico family, who turned the former monastery into a luxurious estate. In later years, the villa underwent numerous renovations and restorations. During World War I, the residence, owned by the German Walter Erich Jacob Kees—like the German Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo—was confiscated by the state treasury, only to later return to private ownership.

What we can admire today is the result of the work of the De Marchi family, who owned the villa during the interwar period. They added elements of neoclassical and romantic architecture, creating a place full of elegance and sophistication. In 1939, the De Marchi family transferred the property into public hands. Since then, Villa Monastero has been open to visitors, who can enjoy both its magnificent interiors and its extraordinary gardens. In 1953, a Conference Center was established here, which continues to host the International School of Physics “Enrico Fermi.” Remarkably, 60 Nobel Prize laureates have participated in its lectures. In 2009, the complex officially became the property of the Province of Lecco.

Stepping inside Villa Monastero, one immediately feels the atmosphere of bygone aristocracy. The interiors are filled with opulence and elegance, blending various architectural and decorative styles that reflect the tastes of its successive owners.

Walking through the villa’s interiors, one can admire intricately decorated ceilings, marble floors, elegant furniture, and numerous works of art—from paintings to sculptures. The grand staircase also commands attention.

One of the rooms that impressed me the most is La Sala Rossa – the Red Room, captivating with its magnificent furniture and an 18th-century tapestry depicting a lion hunt. Another particularly fascinating space is the music room – spacious, featuring two grand pianos, a large golden mirror, and a beautiful stone electric fireplace.

While exploring the villa, it’s impossible not to mention the Sala da Bagno, the bathroom designed in an oriental style. Adorned with majolica and marble, it features an extraordinary bathtub—more like an ornately decorated bathing pool—and also hides an unusual detail: a hand-painted toilet.

Today, Villa Monastero also serves as a house museum, allowing visitors to explore the rich history of this remarkable place. The museum’s collection spans fourteen rooms, divided into several thematic sections, each offering insight into different aspects of the lives of its former residents.

The collection of scientific instruments, books, manuscripts, and antique maps is particularly noteworthy, as it reflects the intellectual pursuits of the villa’s former owners. Moreover, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions dedicated to various aspects of the region’s history, art, and culture.

The Botanical Garden of Villa Monastero

The eclectic-style park surrounding the estate is narrow but stretches nearly 2 kilometers. It cascades down toward the water’s surface, adorned by a stunning wrought-iron gate, characteristic of Lake Como residences, beyond which waves crash against the edge of the steps. Additionally, the lakeside loggia, Moorish pavilion, and over 1,000 native and exotic plant species make this place truly unique.

The gardens have been meticulously designed, blending elements from various styles. Strolling along the pathways, visitors can admire numerous sculptures, fountains, and hidden gazebos that create an ambiance perfect for romantic walks. The gardens also captivate with their rich vegetation—both local and exotic—once brought from the farthest corners of the world. The plants are arranged to form a harmonious whole, despite their diversity, perfectly complementing the villa’s architecture and the natural beauty of Lake Como.

The botanical garden features several varieties of wisteria, a dedicated citrus garden, and a rose garden that combines both historical and modern varieties.

The rose garden is located almost at the very end, from the entrance’s perspective, making it easy to overlook. I particularly highlight this for fellow lovers of these beautiful flowers, myself included.

Visiting Villa Monastero

The estate can be explored in two ways: a full tour, which includes access to the villa’s interiors, now housing a museum, or a visit limited to the gardens. I highly recommend opting for the full experience. To fully enjoy the villa and a romantic stroll through the gardens, plan to set aside at least two hours.

In 2024, ticket prices were:

  • Botanical Garden + Villa Interior – 13 euros per person
  • Garden Only – 10 euros per person.

Tickets can be purchased at the entrance to the estate or in advance on the official website. However, you must select the date and time of your visit when booking online.

Villa Monastero with a dog

You can bring your pet to the botanical garden free of charge, provided they are kept on a leash. However, dogs are not allowed inside the villa, so one person will need to stay outside. Conveniently, there’s a café right next to the villa’s entrance, with tables set under the shade of tall trees—an ideal spot to wait with your furry companion while your travel partner explores the interiors.

Where to park a car?

Exploring Lake Como by car is convenient in many ways, but it also comes with challenges, particularly when it comes to parking in towns and near popular attractions. However, visiting Villa Monastero is a bit easier—there’s a multi-level parking lot right next to the entrance. It’s perfect not only for those wanting to tour the estate but also for visitors exploring Varenna.

Unfortunately, the number of parking spaces is limited, and during the high season, it can be difficult to find an available spot if you arrive in the middle of the day. That’s why I recommend setting off for Varenna early in the morning. After all, mornings on Lake Como can be truly magical.
